Walmart, an American leading retail giant, has filed a patent application for a blockchain-based drone communication system. Walmart has again shown its interest in blockchain-based drones by filing this patent application.
In January 2019, Walmart filed for an application named “Cloning Drones Using Blockchain”, with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) publishing the patent on August 1. The application filing illustrates a system on a drone that will encrypt and store that drone’s operational frameworks. That information will be passed afterwards on to another drone, which will decrypt, read and then configure to those frameworks.
For real, drone communication system would carry messages, coordinate with the communication networks and would allow machines to be aware of each other’s location. Information could be shared based on the common location between drones.
This is not Walmart’s first invasion into blockchain-based drone technology. In 2017, Walmart asked for a patent for a blockchain-based drone package delivery system. Earlier this year, Walmart collaborated with the American Food and Drug Administration and IBM to track pharmaceutical shipments with blockchain technology. Earlier this month, the company has also made an invasion into cryptocurrencies, by submitting another patent application for its own blockchain-based digital currency.
The patent claims that the advantage of blockchain technology lies in data integrity “A blockchain ledger may store any kind of information that may be stored in any other format or medium. For example, a large list of instructions of different types, navigational information, and maps. In this way, the same software profile may be deployed across the cloned drones.”
This year in August, Walmart filed a patent application for a cryptocurrency or digital currency which is similar to Facebook’s Libra. The patent was titled “System and Method Digital Currency via Blockchain”. It explained that the system will generate “One digital currency unit by joining the one digital currency unit to regular currency, storing information of the one digital currency unit into a block of a blockchain and buying or paying the one digital currency unit.”
