On Tuesday, Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) announced the general availability of its Amazon Quantum Ledger Database. It manages the blockchain service that provides an immutable, cryptographically verifiable ledger for applications that require a trusted central authority.

Late last year, Amazon Web Services Quantum Ledger Database was announced at its Re-Invent conference. Amazon Managed Blockchain was also introduced with AWS QLDB. Amazon Managed Blockchain is a service that allows users to create fully managed and scalable blockchain networks based on HyperLedger or Ethereum technology.

While AWS’s QLDB is a more DIY i.e. Do It Yourself platform where centralized service companies can maintain a permanent record of transactions. Eg. It can keep a track of all debit and credit transactions associated with a bank account or track the manufacturing process of a product.

Having familiar database capabilities makes the service setup simple to start and run. According to a statement by Amazon, QLDB’s document-oriented data model makes it suitable for storage of both structured and unstructured data.

Holger Mueller, an analyst at Constellation Research said that it was important for Amazon and other cloud providers as the key enablers of the next-gen applications should provide a way for customers to build blockchains exclusively created on the cloud platforms.

Muller also said, “Today it is Amazon Web Services turn to make its blockchain service generally available, and this is always an important milestone for any product,”. Adding, he said, “Conservative CxOs who don’t want to be beta testers now have the reassurance of a fully and generally available product. It’s still a version one though, so caution is always a good consideration when adopting new technologies.”

As per Amazon’s statement, big companies like Splunk Inc. and Accenture Plc. are already using Amazon’s QLDB in production. The service will be made available starting today in Amazon’s US East’s Ohio and N. Virginia, US West’s Oregon, Asia Pacific’s Tokyo and EU’s Ireland regions. It will be made available on a wider geographical diameter very soon.
