A program initiated by the Indian government has come up with an interactive course for undergraduate level students to know more about blockchains, their use cases, and cryptocurrencies. The course is 12-weeks long and is currently free to enroll-in and learn from. Bitcoin consensus algorithms and basics are some of the topics covered in the course.

Government-Backed Initiative

The free computer-science course on blockchains and cryptocurrencies is being offered by Swayam. Swayam is a learning platform initiated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Indian Government. The 12-week course is entitled “Blockchain Architecture Design and Use Cases” and will run from July 29 to October 18. The exam for the same will be conducted on November 17. Those who wish to get a certificate for the undergraduate course can apply on the Swayam website soon. The FDP (Faculty Development Programme) course is AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) approved.

Swayam described the course as:

Even though the course is free to enroll-in however if someone wants a certificate, then they will have to register in the course and give the proctored exam which will be conducted by the platform at a designated exam center.

The certification exam would cost around Rs 1000 (~$14). The exam will be conducted throughout the country in various cities.

Another course on blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies was offered previously in July 2018 and January 2019 via the NPTEL website, those projects too were funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Over 20,000 people had enrolled for the course in July 2018 and over 14,000 enrolled for the same in January 2019. The NPTEL courses from July 2019 semester will be offered only through the Swayam platform.

What The Course Will Include:

Students can learn the “Basic Crypto Primitives,” “Distributed Consensus” and get a basic “Introduction to Blockchain,” which will include the history, conceptualization, and architecture.

One of the lectures of the course explains, “you must limit the currency to have their value. If you put up a lot of currency in the system, it will gradually reduce the value of that particular currency.”
